Safest way to free car tires from ice?

Question from Emily R: Safest way to free car tires from ice?
I don’t have a garage, and have to park my car outside–after the last two ice storms in the Midwest, my tires have become frozen to the ground in about two or three inches of ice pack. What’s the safest way to get my car free without damaging the tires or engine? Thanks!

Salt will melt the ice and free your tires. For God sake, if it is below freezing do not use hot water!!!!! The hot water will make things worse. Salt will do the trick if you just be patient.

Try getting some 2×6′s and cut them to about a foot long and park on them.
You should stay above the ice and be ready to go.
you can always attach a rope to the boards so you can pull them up after you pull off of them.

Salt the ground around your tires before the storm, if possible. Yhen you may need to salt around the tires after the storm, but will be easier than without the bottom layer. Of course, when all wlse fails, spend about 4 hours on each tire with your hair dryer. Then you will be able to drive to the store for a new hair dryer. :)
